The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has banned Christians from shaking hands as is the norm of the Catholic Church during peace giving.

Lwanga made the directive following the reported cases of Marburg that has so far claimed one.

Catholics shake hands during mass while others hug as a sign of peace.

President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday, during the 52 years Independence celebration at Kololo Airstrip, warned Ugandans not to shake hands or eat game meat in light of the breakout.

The Archbishop said, “We are all Ugandans. I urge all Christians to follow what our President has said,” Lwanga said during the beginning of Novena to mark 50 years since the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI in Rome on October 18 1964.

“As I go out to preach in other Catholic churches I will continue to spread the President’s message of not shaking hands and hugging,” He said.

Meanwhile the pastoral coordinator Fr Dr Mark Richard Ssajjabi said the Novena will be said at Kyamula, where one of the Uganda martyrs Ponsiano Ngondwe was killed; Old Kampala parish where Matia Mulumba was killed; Nalukolongo -Bakateyamba where most of the Martyrs were baptized; Kyingula-Kisenyi where Jean Marie Muzeeyi was killed.

Other places will be Lubaawo, where Gonzaga Gonza was killed; Nabulagala parish where the missionaries’ first mass was celebrated; and Namugongo Martyrs Shrine where Kalooli-Lwanga was murdered and then climax at Lubaga Cathedral at 5.00pm.

Meanwhile, Lwanga called upon Ugandans who would wish to contribute towards the “Olumuli lw’Abajulizi Project” which was launched to renovate the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines and Munyonyo to contribute at least sh1000 every month.

He said that as the Church prepares to celebrate 50 years since the late Pope Paul VI canonized and declared the 22 Catholic Martyrs saints at St. Peter's Basilica, Rome on October 18, 1964, they have come out with numerous plans to redevelop the shrines at Namugongo and Munyonyo.

“Telephone Networks will send messages, and those who would like to contribute towards the renovation of Namugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrine should send their monies to only telephone networks that include MTN, UTL, WARID, AIRTEL and Orange, but not to individual.

The church has also opened an account Number 3810600046 with Centenary Bank under the name “Uganda Martyrs Shrine Golden Jubilees where well-wishers may contribute.
