The green vision of Pope Francis

The green vision of Pope Francis
VATICAN CITY - Main points of Pope Francis's Encyclical on the environment, released on Thursday:

Main Challenge

Climate change represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our time. Its worst impact will probably be felt by developing countries in coming decades.

"The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek  sustainable and integral development."

A man-made problem

Scientific studies indicate that most global warming in recent decades is mainly as a result of human activity.

Humanity must recognise the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption.

Conflict and war

"It is foreseeable that, once certain resources have been depleted, the scene will be set for new wars."

Throwaway culture

"The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth...

"These problems are closely linked to a throwaway culture."

Carbon emissions

"We know that technology based on the use of highly polluting fossil fuels – especially coal, but also oil and, to a lesser degree, gas – needs to be progressively replaced without delay."

Consequences

"If present trends continue, this century may well witness extraordinary climate change and an unprecedented destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences for all of us."

A quarter of the world's population lives on, or near, the coast so sea level rises would be extremely dangerous.

Drastic reductions

Polluting gases must be "drastically reduced" with the reduction of fossil fuels and development of renewable energy.

Rich to blame

Developed countries ought to significantly limit their consumption of non-renewable energy and assist poorer countries to support policies and programmes of sustainable development.

"Many of those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms."

Drinking water

"Access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right.... Some studies warn that an acute water shortage may occur within a few decades unless urgent action is taken."

Biodiversity

"The earth’s resources are also being plundered because of short-sighted approaches to the economy, commerce and production. The loss of forests and woodlands entails the loss of species which may constitute extremely important resources in the future, not only for food but also for curing disease and other uses."

Binding agreements

Enforceable international agreements are urgently needed, since local authorities are not always capable of effective intervention.

Carbon credits

The strategy of buying and selling carbon credits "can lead to a new form of speculation which would not help reduce the emission of polluting gases worldwide".

It may simply become a ploy which permits maintaining the excessive consumption of some countries and sectors.

Religion

"Most people profess to be believers. This should spur religions to dialogue among themselves for the sake of protecting nature, defending the poor, and building networks of respect and fraternity."

Economy and growth

"We need also to think of containing growth by setting some reasonable limits and even retracing our steps before it is too late...

"That is why the time has come to accept decreased growth in some parts of the world."

Consumerism

"Obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, above all when few people are capable of maintaining it, can only lead to violence and mutual destruction."

Technology and profit

"The economy accepts every advance in technology with a view to profit, without concern for its potentially negative impact on human beings."

Pope's visit to Uganda: dates released
Pope Francis will come to Uganda and also go to the Central African Republic in November on his first visit to Africa, the Vatican announced Friday.

The Argentinian pontiff has said several times in recent months that he intended to travel to Africa this year.

"If God permits it I will be in Africa in November, in the Central African Republic and in Uganda," he said earlier this month.

The confirmed dates of November 27-29 were posted Friday on the official Vatican website.

The announcement of the visit to the Central African Republic came as the authorities there said presidential and legislative elections would take place in October and November -- finishing the week before he arrives.

Francis will be in Uganda to mark the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI's canonisation during the first visit by a pontiff to Africa of 22 Catholic martyrs -- converts to Christianity who were executed in the 19th century.

The Central African Republic is seeking to emerge from brutal inter-religious violence in 2013-2014 which left thousands dead, while Uganda remains under threat of attack from Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab Islamists from neighbouring Somalia.

After visits to Sri Lanka and the Philippines in January, Pope Francis is due to visit Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay next month.

In September, he will travel to Cuba and the United States.

Gunman Kills Nine After Opening Fire on Service at Historic African American Church: Shooters of color are called ‘terrorists’ and ‘thugs.’ Why are white shooters called ‘mentally ill’?

Gunman Kills Nine After Opening Fire on Service at Historic African American Church

PrayerCHARLESTON, S.C. — Nine people are dead and several others were injured after an unidentified gunman opened fire during a worship and prayer service at a historic African American church in South Carolina Wednesday night.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9 p.m. local time at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. The suspect is believed to have attended the service for about an hour before standing up and spraying the room with gunfire, reloading several times.

According to reports and still-shots of surveillance video outside of the building, the light-skinned suspect had worn a dark wig and plastic nose and sunglasses to conceal his identity. He is believed to have escaped in a dark four-door sedan before police arrived.

When authorities arrived on the scene, they found eight persons who were already deceased. One church member was transported by ambulance to the hospital, but died on the way.

Among the dead was Emanuel AME Pastor and Senator Clementa Pinckney, 41.

“My friend and brother in Christ Senator Clementa Pinckney was shot to death in the senseless tragedy that occurred in Emanuel AME Church in Charleston,” Senator Larry Grooms posted on Facebook. “My heart breaks for the loss of Sen. Pinckney, the other victims and for their families. Now is the time for prayer. Let us all unite our hearts in prayer and ask God for His grace, love and mercy.”
Mayor Joseph Riley, Jr. condemned the bloodshed as well.

“Of all cities, in Charleston, to have a horrible hateful person go into the church and kill people there to pray and worship with each other is something that is beyond any comprehension and is not explained,” he said. “Obviously the most intolerable and unbelievable act possible. … We are going to put our arms around that church and that church family.”

Police Chief Greg Mullen has vowed to find the perpetrator as a manhunt is underway today. The FBI has joined the investigation.

“This tragedy that we’re addressing right now is undescribable,” he stated Thursday morning. “No one in this community will ever forget this night. And as a result of that, and because of the pain, and because of the hurt that this individual has caused this community, this entire community, the law enforcement agencies that are working on this are committed—we will catch this individual.”

Police believe that the suspect is a clean-shaven man in his early 20’s with sandy blonde hair. He appeared to be wearing multiple layers of clothing upon entry to the building.

A motive is not yet known, but officials suspect that the shooting was racially motivated.

Shooters of color are called ‘terrorists’ and ‘thugs.’ Why are white shooters called ‘mentally ill’?

This racist media narrative around mass violence falls apart with the Charleston church shooting.

Anthea Butler is an associate professor of religion and Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Police are investigating the shooting of nine African Americans at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston as a hate crime committed by a white man. Unfortunately, it’s not a unique event in American history. Black churches have long been a target of white supremacists who burned and bombed them in an effort to terrorize the black communities that those churches anchored. One of the most egregious terrorist acts in U.S. history was committed against a black church in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963. Four girls were killed when members of the KKK bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church, a tragedy that ignited the Civil Rights Movement.

But listen to major media outlets and you won’t hear the word “terrorism” used in coverage of Tuesday’s shooting. You won’t hear the white male shooter, identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, described as “a possible terrorist.” And if coverage of recent shootings by white suspects is any indication, he never will be. Instead, the go-to explanation for his actions will be mental illness. He will be humanized and called sick, a victim of mistreatment or inadequate mental health resources. Activist Deray McKesson noted this morning that, while discussing Roof’s motivations, an MSNBC anchor said “we don’t know his mental condition.” That is the power of whiteness in America.

Here’s what you need to know about Dylann Roof(1:09)
Dylann Roof is in custody after police say he opened fire at a historic African American church in Charleston, SC. Here’s a look at the 21-year-old's background, including recent arrests, and what authorities say happened inside the church. (Alice Li/The Washington Post)

U.S. media practice a different policy when covering crimes involving African Americans and Muslims. As suspects, they are quickly characterized as terrorists and thugs, motivated by evil intent instead of external injustices. While white suspects are lone wolfs — Mayor Joseph Riley of Charleston already emphasized this shooting was an act of just “one hateful person” — violence by black and Muslim people is systemic, demanding response and action from all who share their race or religion. Even black victims are vilified. Their lives are combed for any infraction or hint of justification for the murders or attacks that befall them: Trayvon Martin was wearing a hoodie. Michael Brown stole cigars. Eric Garner sold loosie cigarettes. When a black teenager who committed no crime was tackled and held down by a police officer at a pool party in McKinney, Tex., Fox News host Megyn Kelly described her as “No saint either.”

Early news reports on the Charleston church shooting followed a similar pattern. Cable news coverage of State Sen. and Rev. Clementa Pinckney, pastor of Emanuel AME who we now know is among the victims, characterized his advocacy work as something that could ruffle feathers. The habit of characterizing black victims as somehow complicit in their own murders continues.

It will be difficult to hold to this corrosive, racist media narrative when reporting on the shooting at Emanuel AME Church. All those who were killed were simply participating in a Wednesday night Bible study. And the shooter’s choice of Emanuel AME was most likely deliberate, given its storied history. It was the first African Methodist Episcopal church in the South, founded in 1818 by a group of men including Morris Brown, a prominent pastor, and Denmark Vesey, the leader of a large, yet failed, slave revolt in Charleston. The church itself was targeted early on by fearful whites  because it was built with funds from anti-slavery societies in the North. In 1822, church members were investigated for involvement in planning Vesey’s slave revolt, and the church was burned to the ground in retribution.

With that context, it’s clear that killing the pastor and members of this church was a deliberate act of hate. Mayor Riley  noted that “The only reason that someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate.” But we need to take it a step further. There was a message of intimidation behind this shooting, an act that mirrors a history of terrorism against black institutions involved in promoting civil and human rights. The hesitation on the part of some of the media to label the white male killer a terrorist is telling.
In the rapidly forming news narrative, the fact that black churches and mosques historically have been the targets of racial violence in America should not be overlooked. While the 1963 Birmingham church is the most historic, there also was a series of church burnings during the 1990s. Recognition of the terror those and similar acts impose on communities seems to have been forgotten post-Sept. 11. The subsequent Islamophobia that has gripped sectors of media and politics suggests that “terrorism” only applies in cases where the suspects are darker skinned.

This time, I hope that reporters and newscasters will ask the questions that get to the root of acts of  racially motivated violence in America. Where did this man, who killed parishioners in their church during Bible study, learn to hate black people so much? Did he have an allegiance to the Confederate flag that continues to fly over the state house of South Carolina? Was he influenced by right-wing media’s endless portrayals of black Americans as lazy and violent?

I hope the media coverage won’t fall back on the typical narrative ascribed to white male shooters: a lone, disturbed or mentally ill young man failed by society. This is not an act of just “one hateful person.” It is a manifestation of the racial hatred and white supremacy that continues to pervade our society, 50 years after the Birmingham church bombing galvanized the Civil Rights Movement. It should be covered as such. And now that authorities have found their suspect, we should be calling him what he is: a terrorist.

Prosperity Preacher Creflo Dollar to Get Coveted $70 Million Dollar Jet

Prosperity Preacher Creflo Dollar to Get Coveted $70 Million Dollar Jet

DollarCOLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Prosperity Preacher Creflo Dollar’s recent pleas for money to buy himself a mega-million dollar jet are no longer needed since his ministry’s board has now agreed to buy him one.

Dollar, whose teachings state that God wants all Christians to be prosperous and that material wealth is a sign of God’s favor, will get the coveted jet after the board of directors for his nonprofit organization known as “World Changers Church International” approved the purchase.

“A long-range, high-speed, intercontinental jet aircraft is a tool that is necessary in order to fulfill the mission of the ministry,” the board said in a statement. “We plan to acquire a Gulfstream G650 because it is the best, and it is a reflection of the level of excellence at which this organization chooses to operate.”

The estimated cost of the jet the board has agreed to purchase is reportedly around $70 million dollars.

“Let me tell you something about believing God. I can dream as long as I want to. I can believe God as long as I want to,” Dollar stated in a video posted to YouTube not affiliated with him. “If I want to believe God for a $65 million plane, you cannot stop me. You cannot stop me from dreaming.”

As previously reported, staff World Changers Church International in College Park, Ga. had posted an online plead on the organization’s website last month as Dollar asked for 200,000 people to donate $300 dollars each so that he could purchase a new G650 airplane.

Dollar explained that his current 1984 jet, which he purchased in 1999, experienced engine failure in London on a recent trip to Australia. He said that the plane is grounded and is in need of being replaced.

“The plane is not so Creflo Dollar can get on by himself and fly,” public relations representative Juda Engelmayer told the Christian Post. “They take a ministry team of 10 to 15 people with them. They take thousands of pounds of food and provisions with them when they go around the world. If he’s coming to the New York church, he’ll hop on a Delta flight. If he’s taking 12 people plus 100,000 pounds of food, it’s not that simple.”

But as word broke about the project, some still expressed dismay as to why Dollar, who leads a 30,000-member megachurch and lives in a million dollar home, needs such an expensive aircraft, which is reportedly sought out by billionaires. David Graham, Global Express aircraft captain with Advanced Air Management, told the publication that Engelmayer’s claims don’t add up.

“[The aircraft] cannot carry 12 people and 100,000 pounds of food and supplies,” he said.
Dollar’s staff removed the online plea from the World Changers website following negative public reaction and said that the televangelist would be flying commercial while the campaign was being reassessed. However, in a recent message delivered to his congregation, Dollar appeared determined to purchase the jet despite opposition.

“You cannot stop me from dreaming. I’m going to dream until Jesus comes,” he said as his congregation stood to their feet and broke out into cheers. “And here’s another thing I want you to understand: … If they discover life on Mars—if you think a $65 million plane was too much—if they discover that there’s life on Mars, they’re going to need to hear the gospel and I’m going have to believe God for a billion dollar space shuttle because we got to preach the gospel on Mars.”
Dollar urged those gathered to likewise “dream big.”

“I dare you to tell me I can’t dream. I dare you to tell me that I can’t believe God,” he said. “Dream on, baby. Don’t dream on what you can have, dream about what the devil says you can’t have. Dream for the best. Dream for the best healing. Dream for the best deliverance. Dream for the best house. Dream for the best car. Just ’cause the world don’t have it, doesn’t mean you can’t have it.”

Dollar, who has drawn criticism for years over his prosperity preaching and video clips showing the televangelist dancing in tithes with “money cometh” preacher Leroy Thompson, told his congregation that he believes God is on his side and that the effort is therefore unstoppable.

“You cannot stop and you cannot curse what God has blessed,” he asserted. “Half the people that are commenting on the Internet don’t even know me. They don’t know this ministry. They don’t know what we do. That’s why they ask the question, ‘What does a preacher need with an airplane?’ If you knew what we did then you wouldn’t ask that question. But you don’t know what we do.”

“The early Church was married to poverty, prisons and persecutions. Today, the Church is married to prosperity, personality and popularity,” the late preacher Leonard Ravenhill once stated.

Teacher Who Read Homosexual Book to Third Graders Resigns Following Parental Outrcy: Video of Young Boy Dancing Sexually in Streets as ‘Gay’ Pride Attendees Cheer Raising Concerns

Teacher Who Read Homosexual Book to Third Graders Resigns Following Parental Outrcy

King BookEFLAND, N.C. — An elementary school teacher who read a book about homosexuality to third graders has resigned following outcry from parents who were upset that their children were exposed to the material.

Both teacher Omar Currie and Assistant Principal Meg Goodhand have resigned from their positions at Efland-Cheeks Elementary School following the incident, which occurred in April of this year.
According to reports, Currie decided to read the book to his class after a student chided a male classmate during gym class and told him that he was acting like a girl. Currie, a homosexual himself, said that because “the word gay was used in a derogatory way,” he believed that students should be taught a lesson.

“In that moment, it just seemed natural to me to read the book and have a conversation about treating people with respect,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “My focus then was on the child, and helping the child.”

Therefore, Currie obtained a copy of the book “King & King” from Goodhand, a story about a single prince who is encouraged by his mother to marry, but passes up all the princesses as potential mates to instead “marry” the brother of a princess.

However, after some parents learned that Currie, 25, had read the book to their children, they contacted the school. Within hours, Currie received a call from the principal, requesting a meeting the following morning.
Three parents soon filed written complaints over the matter, which resulted in public meetings regarding concerns about the book being read to children. One meeting was reportedly attended by 200 people.

“This is nothing more than bringing homosexuality into a school where it does not belong,” one parent declared.

Others stated that Currie was seeking to “indoctrinate” children through “psycho-emotional rape.”
A school review committee, which investigated the matter, upheld the use of the book twice. But the principal issued a new policy to teachers, requiring them to provide parents with an advance list of books to be children that year.

Currie says that he finds the requirement to be “unrealistic,” because “great teachers pull text because it’s right for the moment.”

“I think that that’s very dangerous for a school system to get behind and support,” he said.
However, Currie says that he ultimately resigned because he does not feel like he has the support of administrators.

“I’m resigning because when me and my partner sat down and talked about it we felt I wasn’t going to have the support I needed to move forward at Efland,” he said. “It’s very disappointing.”
A review of the book will now be conducted by Interim Superintendent Pam Jones following an appeal from parents, and another public meeting is scheduled for today.

“I feel to jump to reading this book was inappropriate and stood to reinstate the idea to the bullied child—the accusation of the bully,” one commenter stated. “Now, he has been twice traumatized by this…”

Video of Young Boy Dancing Sexually in Streets as ‘Gay’ Pride Attendees Cheer Raising Concerns

http://christiannews.net/2015/06/16/video-of-young-boy-dancing-sexually-in-streets-as-gay-pride-attendees-cheer-raising-concerns/

Brazilian BoyA video recently posted to YouTube that shows a young boy dancing in a sexual manner during a “gay” pride event while onlookers cheered him on is raising concerns from viewers nationwide.

The video was posted on Thursday by an online publication called “Ovenworthy,” and was entitled “This Is the Future You Chose.” It shows a young child believed to be no older than 12 years old grinding and twerking to the song “Sissy That Walk” by drag queen RuPaul at the Sao Paolo Pride Festival in Brazil. The boy, shirtless and wearing very short jean shorts, is surrounded by event attendees who cheer on his moves.
The video was restricted to viewing for those 18 and up because of its sexualized content.

Gay Star News, in reporting about the concerns that followed the posting of the video, said that the boy was simply “having a great time” and called those who opposed the scenario “homophobes.”

Some readers agreed.

“I bet homophobes rather see a young boy carrying a gun. Homophobes should mind their own sex-life! Do we question their bed-activities?” one wrote.

“In the 90’s there was a popular booty-shaking dance Lambada, not much different from twerking—all the kids were dancing! This kid is just having fun, and yes, in Brazil sexuality is a lot more part of the culture then any westerner can understand,” another stated.

But others, including some of Gay Star News’ readers, took issue with the footage.
“I’m not a homophobe, but I find videos of prepubescent children dancing provocatively completely disgusting. I also find Gay Star news method of defense equally disgusting,” one wrote.
“As a transgender woman I find this disgusting. Why would you get a prepubescent child to do acts like this? People already think we’re pedophiles,” a second stated.

“That kid didn’t just learn that from anywhere. He has obviously been exposed to inappropriate behavior and it is up to his guardians to look after him properly. The kid might not see it as sexual, but that is not the point, and if you think this type of behavior and little boys in tight short shorts is ok then you have a serious problem…” a third opined.

Christian commentator Matt Barber of Barbwire.com also expressed concern over the video, stating that it is indicative of the continuing moral degradation of society.

“[T]his is extremely disgusting and troubling. It is, however, where we are headed as a nation,” he wrote. “The sexual anarchist agenda steamrolls ahead and children are in the cross-hairs. The organized ‘LGBT’ lobby has long lusted for the abolition of all age of consent laws. While not all ‘gays’ are child abusers, pederasty has been a central aspect of the homosexual lifestyle since the days of the Greek bathhouse.”

“This is further proof that the homosexual movement is not about equality, but about the normalization of sexual perversion,” Barbwire guest blogger Caiden Cowger also wrote. “It also reveals that it is just a matter of time before pedophilia will be promoted under the ‘LGBT’ banner in the U.S. In many countries it already is.”

Why my church members stripped during service – South African pastor

Congregants in a church in South Africa started to undress in church as self proclaimed prophet Penuel Mnguni of the End Times Disciples Ministries in Soshanguve extension 13, Tshwane preached.
He said God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with no clothes on, and because they had faith in the Lord, they didn’t even know they were undressed.
He quoted Genesis 2:25 that said Adam and Eve were as they were created.

“Having no clothes on them, they stood in need of none to shelter them from the heat or cold, or to conceal any parts of their bodies from the sight of others,” read the pastor.

He said with the help of God they could even change the weather, and as he spoke people started saying it was too hot, and started taking off their clothes.

The pastor said that was a healing sign and everyone who was in the church was healed and delivered from evil.

Pastor Penuel said Prophet Penuel Mnguni of the End Times Disciples Ministries in Soshanguve extension 13, in Tshwane, South Africa
“Daniel has been my spiritual guide for many years,” he said.
Penuel said people condemn him because only the wicked see that a person is undressed and there is no shame in being without clothes if one really believes in the living God.

“At first it seemed as if the people could handle it,” said a member of the church.
“But as the preacher spoke the heat increased until it was burning hot and they took off their clothes.”
The source said as men and women were stripping down, the church prophet kept telling them: “God is with us, and to God be the glory!”

The source said it was the fear of God that made them take off their clothes.

Rabboni Ministries: From making congregants eat grass to jumping on them

By Sowetan LIVE | Aug 29, 2014 | COMMENTS [ 90 ]

The controversial Rabboni Centre Ministries is once again the main topic on social media after pictures of a Pastor stepping on church goers emerged.

The church led by Pastor Daniel Lesego grabbed headlines earlier this year when it emerged that the congregants had been convinced that eating grass would help them “to get closer to God”.
Now pictures showing a Pastor Alex from Soweto jumping on people as they lay on the floor have been published on the church’s Facebook page.

“Pastor Alex showed great faith when he paced towards the congregants, who were earlier called to sleep by the Man of God, and stepping and jumping upon them. He was handed a microphone and thereafter the sleeping congregants began to wake up and sleep as he commanded them,” the post explains.
This was reportedly after the Ps Alex stood up from the congregation during a Tuesday service and expressed the need perform the same miracles as the ‘Man of God’ (Pastor Lesego).

The post also mentioned that Pastor Alex was a first time visitor at Rabboni Centre Ministries, adding that none of the congregants had been injured during the ‘demonstration exercise’.
One of the people who had been stepped on, Thandi Alset from Mabopane, reportedly told the congregation that she had not felt a thing through the entire exercise.
